Regards the Home Inspector qualification you are probably 'out of time'. I think that this qualification no longer exists or will soon be scrapped. So it is best to check that you will be able to submit surveys before you buy any moisture meters.
The good news is that the RPSA (Residential Property Surveyors Association) is central to the job of creating the successor qualification to the DipHI.
It is still possible to qualify as a DipHI, but there is no route for new entrants.
The new qualification, currently being finalised by the PSSB (Property Surveying Standards Board - a collaboration between SAVA, BRE and RPSA), will allow existing DipHI's to easily convert and create a route for those wishing to enter the residential property surveying industry.
The even better news is that a growing number of RPSA members (all of whom are DipHI, or in the final throes of qualifying to be) are generating worthwhile numbers of surveys. I know of several who are regularly doing 10-15 HCS's a month.....and at decent fees too.
Please don't look at completing a DipHI as closure. Look at it as an opportunity to become a surveyor....exactly as you originally intended to be!
Feel free to contact me (I'm the RPSA Chairman) if you need more information.
